Think you have the right answer, I did reduce the Volume setting on my engines, use "4"
to lower volume further, even shut it off.

How is the volume adjustment on your engine set? If the engine volume is too low this might be limiting the range. Check your instruction sheet on how to adjust the volume on the engine, I understand there are a couple of different installations.

Good luck.

CAB-1 Sound Control "1" and "4" Buttons

Is it typical for such a narrow range of Volume control using "4" to lower sound....almost goes to no sound with one push of the button ???

Then I hit "1" to increase volume, not much of a ramp as compared to the Speed Control.

Anyone with similar operation ?
