Lionel and WWII
Posted by dsmith on Friday, July 13, 2007 4:38 PM

I have read that Lionel did not produce toy trains during World War 2 and produced marine equipment for the war effort.  Recently I was at an antique store in Marshall, Michigan and I came across 2 marine compasses that were made by Lionel.  I thought that you might like to see the photos of these rare pieces.

Very interesting. It seems that a lot of companies made some very unique items for the war effort. Thank you for sharing.

It is a interesting part of the Lionel history that, unfortunatley gets less attention than it should. After joining the Army I really wanted a piece from this era. I bought a field teliphone off ebay. Really neat. Last road march we did I packed it in my ruck sack for good luck.

They also produced Fuses for Bombs,Binnicles, & an Electric Cow Fence after the War & was one of the first to pioneer Air Conditioning & had very little funding to put it on the Market.

Thanks for sharing this!  I've always been very interested in the Second World War and would love to have one of these.  However, they seem to be a bit pricey for my wallet.
