Not So Grumpy Today
Posted by dougdagrump on Wednesday, July 11, 2007 9:21 PM

Not "Grumpy" tonite.  Big Smile [:D]

I finally got my Rock Island passenger cars !!!!!  Approve [^] They are the MTH 16.5" Railking cars, 7 car set, and do they look SWEET. Anybody have these same size cars that they have put passengers in ? Has anybody used the K-Line people, currently marketed by several others, if so how well did they fit ?

On most railking cars in which I installed K-Line people I had to do amputations of the legs. I gave each passenger a shot of wiskey and had them bite down on a towl while I snapped off their legs. Missing legs not visible looking from the outside of the car they hit the back of the seat ahead. On some RK cars this is not necessary. I think on the Budd cars I did not have to do it.

I glued in the figures with clear silicone I purchased at Wallmart.

Doug - I too had to do multiple amputations.  It wasn't so bad most people were so excited to get out of that package.  I had a little more difficulty with the Dome car.  After I had the people in and seated and put the car back together, I passenger was so excited he lost his head.  But All n all they seem to appreciate it.

I have these cars in PRR "Fleet of Modernism" livery. I used over 100 MTH figures in them that I painted myself. They are a bit smaller than all the other seated figures, and fit well (with minor clipping of some toes). They also have nice detail (a few other brands I've seen have a "big-headed kids" look, IMO). I've gone as far to put full table settings in the dining car. Joe

Thanks for the responses guys. Approve [^] I had used the K-Line people in my shorter MTH madisons and didn't have to do any "Salami Surgery" except for the dining car patrons. I was hoping it wouldn't be required with the streamliners.

Joe, What did you use to do the table settings and do you have any photos ? That really sounds pretty neat, that would really surprise the visitors to the museum. Thumbs Up [tup]

I'm too stupid to figure out how to post photos, but...I made table tops from cream color styrene. This gave me a base to put the table settings on out-of-car (easier that way). I made them a little wider than the table (for extra space, and to hide feet). The plates are hole-punched out of glossy photo paper. Napkins are thin stryene with 3 thin silver lines on them for "silverware". Short glasses are small clear beads, tall glasses are made with narrow clear straws that are found with kid's juice boxes. Vases are small silver elongated beads filled with painted small dried flowers.

After I did all this, I found a bag full of many plastic place settings (plate, cup/saucer, silverware, soup bowl) on eBay. These had been made by "Circus Craft", and they come up for auction now and then. If you need a dozen or so, email me and I'll send them...no charge. Joe
