GP-7 and GP-9 parts interchange
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, April 2, 2007 6:48 PM

I have a Lionel 8477 GP-9 with a cratered pullmor motor. Can I use the power truck / motor from a GP-7 in place of the bad motor? There is a motor and frame on e-bay I was thinking about.

Any one know where I can find replacement parts for 70-86 vintage engines?

Thanks

The only difference between a lionel Gp-9 and GP-7 is the dynamic brake on the shell. This is not true on the real engines. As long as you are buying one with a pullmor moter like yours there is really no difference. There have been different ones available. ie:pullmore motor, can motors, truck mounted motors and various electronics. As long as the guts are the same it will work.

Man knows his stuff.  I have lots of brake blisters.  Every GP7 I buy gets changed top GP9.  That is what Lionel did.

I saw that auction for the no-shell geep that had the TMCC guts pulled out. $79.00 + shipping...

All you really need is one of these:

Only in the world of Lionel is a GP7 with a dynamic-brake blister not a GP7 with dynamic-brakes but rather a GP9, as Edward says.

Don't forget that EMD made dynamic brakes an option on both GP-7s and GP-9s.
