Over the years my old, well run, Lionel 2035 locomotive seems to require a drop of oil on the armature shaft after a few hours of operation to keep it from "squeaking or binding".  Does anyone know if this is normal or maybe due to wearing of a bearing or other part?  Incidently, after a small drop of oil is applied the engine runs just fine.  Thanks for any input.

Don, This sounds plenty normal to me. I lubricate my engines after a few hours  of running also, its just normal maintainence.Approve [^] The armature shaft is the fastest rotating part on PW engines, so it makes sense that the oil will get vaporized or slung off over a period of time on tyhe fast moving part. Unless it looks worn (hole oversize), then it ok. Just keep it up and all will be good.

Switch to a synthetic oil, it may last longer.  Don't forget to lube the wheel axles and gear axles too, & both ends of the armature.  The brush plate end may have a little extra clearance in it from age, it wouldn't hurt to use a little gear lube like Lucas Red 'n Tacky on the ends of the armature to take up some of that slack from age/wear/tear.

and is "slicker".  Less heat, less wear.

Hello Don- It sounds like the Bronze Bushing on the Gear Plate for the Armature Shaft may be worn out & needs to be replaced. This is not good as this is a sign that the Bushing can no longer hold Oil & your Motor will run harder & hotter as well. Try Jeff Kane at The Train Tender website & he should be able to help you out as he has friendly & reliable service & he should have the parts on hand to help you out. P.S.- The Binding is of extra concern as that can wear out the Gears over time & the engine will no longer be able to run at all. Take Care & have a very Merry Christmas & a Happy New Year.
