mikekc44,
I would get the Thomas Train in Lionel O scale with Fastrac so you can add to the track system later on and add more trains too. Most of the trains will run on any of the new transformers, if you are starting out get new transformers to avoid having problems later on. For now stay away from two rail in O scale as it is very differant than three rail track.
Depends on your budget, however RMT has some nice trains to add to any three rail Lionel or MTH train set. Williams Trains are another source for quality trains in Lionel size, won't have all the features of a Lionel but won't have the high price tag either.

Sort of. If you can visit a local hobby store and ask this same question, and they can show you examples of the rolling stock.........................as they say a picture is worth a thousand words, and you will see the size differences between Lionel's products. Sometimes they build them to scale and sometimes they build them "compressed" meaning that they take some liberties with the scale on certain parts of the model.
However, many of us, including me, mix all the different sizes together on the same layout.
