Replacing broken knuckle couplers
Posted by Dr. John on Saturday, October 22, 2005 3:40 PM
I have two K-Line engines that I bought used a while back - an old S-2 and an MP-15. Both are in good shape except they are both missing a coupler. Apparently they were dropped at some point in time. [B)]

My question is two-fold :

One - who supplies replacement couplers?

Two - how do you go about installing the replacement on the above mentioned locomotives.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated! [:)]

John is the whole coupler head and arm broken off or damaged, or are you just talking about replacing a knuckle only? You may need to get the parts from K-line if the head or shank is broken off.

Knuckles themselves may be interchangable between manufacturers.

Dr. John, when I've needed something for my K-Line equipment I've found calling, or e-mailing, K-Line the best. I haven't seen any ads for K-Line repair parts and unless your near a "SuperStore" I doubt any dealers would have any.

John's question is a good one. I don't have the answers he needs but it would be nice to see a CTT article on this. I have couplers that work perfectly, like on my MTH passenger cars and I have others that are real stinkers.

Since I'm building a very wide radius layout, I'm likely to do a slow replacement of all of my couplers with kadees, which are supposed to be much more reliable (if your trackwork is smooth).

But knowing how to replace a broken or missing coupler and which companies make replacement parts is definitely a good question and worth a bump up to top.

In both instances, the coupler has broken at the shank which is still attached to the pilot/truck. I will contact K-Line about replacement couplers (should have thought of that myself). Have any of you done a coupler "transplant?"

Thanks for the replies!
