A few weeks ago I purchased a Lionel Locomotive #8800 with Tender from ebay. The seller said it didn't work and that it could be used for parts or restoration ,I submitted an offer and it was accepted. When I received the items I was surprised to see that both parts were in cosmetically good condition. I was even more suprised to see the thing run,a bit sqeaky but it ran. A cleaning and lube improved it's performance.
My dad started in trains in 1934 when he bought our first set,that train and those that followed were in my opinion electro mechanical devices. As I understand it somewhere in the 1970's Lionel took stock and realized it's time for change,electronic change. They want to go solid state the whistle is made up of transistors caps and resistors and from what I'm told you need a special control that goes in series with one side of the transformer. I don't have that control and the worse part of it is I wouldn't know where to look for one.
It's been said that Lionel made this locomotive for three years,1978 to 1981 and for this reason I had hoped to find a service manual without too much trouble, I was wrong I had an easier time getting technical info for my 262E locomotive. I just got involved in service work and need to acquaint myself with this new technology. For starters I'd like to restore this 8800 I hope to be able to get technical notes,parts availibilty and any information from those who may have one.

Your 8800 does not have a whistle, but does have the electronic Mighty Sound of Steam. The one wire connection between the loco & tender is the wire from the switch which times the "hiss" with the motion of the drivers.
Before testing this feature, disassemble the tender, clean off all remnants of the foam backing from the chassis and the circuit board with a nylon bristle brush, and re-affix the board with a good double sided foam tape.
Connect the wire from the loco to the tender for sound(there should be a factory male/female disconect).
Servicing is the same for any prewar or postwar motor - oil on bearings & axles, grease on gears. The 8800 has just forward & reverse, no neutral.

Did u find any parts diagrams for your 8800 train. Been looking for sometime now. This was bought for me when I was born has some miner damage. Looking for red headlights, bell and I believe it's called e-unit (on top of train switch that controls forward and reverse).
I have seen this one before the first thing I noticed different was the running lights are green and on the top of locmotive. My running lights are red and work off the headlight bulb.
Red classification lights are possible but unusual. They indicate that the locomotive is running at the rear of the train. They are equivalent to taillights.

That is the diagram for the 8800, and the parts list, as found in the Lionel Service Supplement 1-9.

While getting the traction tires from The Train tender I would call Jeff and ask him about the front truck part. as sometimes he has them listed a little different and save the shipping from two places.

I must say thanks again. But this time have a problem with the rear truck assembly.My truck has no bearing caps and has a diffident drawbar( bent different and metal that holds the rear truck axle). Any help with this would be great it's my last parts I need to order. thanks again
Think I found it. Looks like it part number 8040-15. Would like to have a complete parts list of the parts if anyone help. Thanks
