What sort of tool do you use to measure wheel gauge on typical toy train 3 rail style O & O-27 equipment?

The wheel gauge is not kept to close tolerances on our trains with non-scale wheels.  A caliper such as this is sufficient to get our wheels in the range to operate on our non-scale track. For scale trains with scale wheels, this gauge is used. The track gauge is here.

This forum is ok, but I noticed the O Gauge Railroading one has more traffic & faster responses.
