Does anybody know if the 6257 caboose ever came with 2 operating couplers? Just today I bought a 6257 caboose that has 2 bar-end operating trucks. According to a few websites, that caboose only ever had one coupler. Could it be real, or is it a homemade job?
There was at least 1 made with 2 couplers, however anyone could have added it, it is very easy to do.

A 6257 with two couplers is easy to fake. But it would have to be staple end trucks, and come with a 6257 box to be legit.
Yours could be home brew, or a late 6457 frame.

All my 6257 cabooses have 2 couplers...I add them. Also windows and ladders if I have them around.
I have a 6017 with two couplers. I know my dad added the rear coupler in the early 60's. I think he used Scout conversion kit.
The # 6257 was the supplied Caboose in the 1948 O-27 Sets. Except --
Sets with Steam Switcher Locomotives had the # 6257X. As was the Lionel policy in pre-war sets, a Switcher Set Caboose was provided with front and rear coulpers.

Mine is the dark red version with "LIONEL LINES", "6257", and the Lionel L logo. The trucks look like a factory job, as they are both the same trucks, and the rivets do not look like they've been removed.
The 6257 with two couplers was listed as 6257x and part of set # 1425b (Type I) as part of the 1948 switcher set. The set included 1656 Switcher, 6403b tender, black 6456 hopper, 6465 tank car, & 6257X caboose. Being 1948 set, the trucks would be staple end, bar-end started in 1951. The set rated as rarity 6, value $850 excellent, $1400 like new according to Doyle's Catalog of Lionel Trains.
