Rock Island Northerns
Posted by arkansasrailfan on Friday, May 18, 2007 3:15 PM
This group of locomotives are in two groups pre-war and post-war the first was 5100 and the rest were built like that, only the second group had some changes, like being built to burn oil. They were very similar to the MILW northerns, but had differnt fronts and tenders. MILW and RI engines were built by Alco. Now my ? is that are there any RI northerns left, and where and what # are they. I know that there are MILW northerns left, including 261.

Unfortunately all of these have been scrapped, as is the case with most other interesting steam engines.

steamlocomotive.com has a complete listing of all the modern classes of steam locomotives, including whether any engines in a particular class survived.  A good, quick research site that I often use myself when wondering which ones made it.
