The reason I'm a lucky railfan is that I grew up when steam was the standard and a diesel powered train was the rare exception.

I know what you mean. The Boston and Maine ran in a cut behind our middle school; lots of maroon and gold Alcos, geeps, etc. It helped to break up the monotony of the day. BTW, the line is now a bike path.
