Arkansas Railroads: past and present part 2
Posted by arkansasrailfan on Friday, May 11, 2007 9:52 PM
The Missouri and Arkansas, better known as the Missouri and North Arkansas, was a railroad that was built for a tourist and economy boom that would never exsist. It was doomed from the start. Reaching from a little known town in Missouri, to Helena, Arkansas. All of it is gone except for the now isolated Eureka Springs branch, some bridges, piers, some buildings, and a heavyweight that is in bad shape, but is only the body. The heavyweight is actually MoPac, but some people say it's not.  Much of the grade is in exsistence, but a lot of it is either polwed over or is on private property.  One section may come back to life, and it would be only two miles long, and a road would have to be rerouted. The M&A died in 1946, and two tourist lines and short line came out of the ashes. The Arkansas & Ozarks last until the 60s, when a washout severed it line in half and the railroad declared itself bankrupt and all the track was pulled up. The Eureka Springs & North Arkansas is on all of the Eureka Springs branch, and a half mile of mainline(about).  The ES&NA is for sale, and runs only in the spring.  The other tourist lline ran over several miles of track through Beaver, Arkansas, but ran out money and went bankrupt too.  The ES&NA is the only part of the M&A left to date.
