BNSF has the two busiest lines. A former Northern Pacific line runs north to Seattle. Union Pacific has trackage rights on it, and the Coast Starlight runs on it. The other is the former Spokane, Portland and Seattle line heading east to Spokane along the north bank of the Columbia River. It is used by the Portland leg of the Empire Builder.
Union Pacific has the other two busy lines into Portland. One heads east to Wyoming along the south bank of the Columbia River. The other is the former Southern Pacific line running south to California, which also is used by the Coast Starlight.
Regional railroad Portland and Western use secondary lines running SW and NW from the city.
