Historic Photo
Posted by ssocal on Friday, January 26, 2007 12:27 AM

I've been lurking here for awhile, I ran across this the other day and thought it may be of interest. Its the Santa Fe Railroad bridge and train, over Canyon Diablo. Coconino County, Arizona taken 1885.

Here's a link to a high resolution image. It clearly shows Atlantic & Pacific, A.& P. R.R.

Did you notice (full resolution image) the avertising on the canyon wall, near the bottom of the right full support?   Nice pic.

Couldn't see the advertising. There is an area in partial shadow that looks a bit like a billboard until you look at it closely.

Heck of a bridge in those times.

Imagine what those folks must think on us looking back at them via monitors 110 years later?

Do you know the height / length of this bridge?

Found this description at another site, it's on the back of a post card.

Canyon Diablo is a gash in the level plain 540 feet wide and 222 feet deep and is crossed by a steel bridge 600 feet long

Here's a photo of the current bridge
