Not sure if the Sierra RR territory in California counts as "prairie" ?? But then the train was used in "Little House on the Prairie" but then they had a couple of characters riding "The El"...in Minneapolis!!

Nothin beats a branchline in the middle of the Prairie. Boy am i glad to live in Manitoba, we still have quite a few branchlines in use. My favourite being the timeless Prairie Dog Central which operates a 4-4-0 steam engine from 1882, though the engine is currently being repaired and has recieved a new boiler. The restoration is being headed by a guy from Wales. (If you want to see some great videos go to the Prairie Dog Central Website posted below)Whistling [:-^]

If you do a little searching on the net, you can find a few sites that have info on the train and hotel and background on the shows/actors/writers etc

I watched it when it was first on, CBS had a slew of "rural" shows (Beverly Hillbillies, Petticoat Junction, Hee Haw, Green Acres, Andy Griffith/Mayberry RFD) that they cancelled despite great ratings (along with Ed Sullivan) because some 'expert' advisors told them the demographics were wrong and they weren't appealing to the 'right people'.

<> BTW the dog on the show later starred in at least the first of those "Benji" movies in the seventies. O and of course the train was on the Sierra RR, locomotive was No. 3 which was in a ton of Hollywood movies and TV shows like "High Noon", "The Virginian", "Back to the Future", "Wyatt Earp" etc.

Yep, I remember it, and Green Acres.  Haven't seen either one in years though.

Enjoy

Just wonderin if anybody on here watches or is familiar with an old 60's show called Petticoat Junction? I think it's one of the best shows ever, it has all the classic trappings of the Glory Days of railroading as well as funny quirks and situations. The only channel i know that plays it is TV LAND on digital.
