Question 2 for Passengerfan: correct blue for Wabash P1 4-6-4?
Posted by VAPEURCHAPELON on Tuesday, October 24, 2006 1:01 PM

Hi Passengerfan (or any other member who can answer),

a couple of weeks ago I won a H0scale brass Hallmark/Ajin Wabash P1 4-6-4 which I have completely overworked and heavily upgraded in detail. So now it is ready to paint, but I am not sure what is the correct blue for it. I also have a nice brass Nakamura J2 4-6-2 factory painted in normal Wabash blue, but I saw some color photos of the prototype P1 where it seems that the P1 blue was somewhat brighter. Or does it delude? If not, do you have some accurate info how to mix the correct paint?

Thank you and greetings from

Let me hitch hike on this question w/ a couple of my own.   What's a good color match for the white/cream and is the lettering blue or red?   I've got a video that shows a P-1 and I'm abouit 90% sure the lettering's blue, but that 10% bothers me.

Jim,

the lettering is blue. I have some color photos where it is clearly visible. Also in the Wabash book I have there it is described as blue. Only the outer edges of the white (or cream, or whatever) stripe are red.

Thanks.   That takes care of the remaining 10%.   Now all I have to do is get up the cumption to kit bash one of those highly distinctive 2 baggage door combines for my Bluebird.

Jim,

I forgot to mention that the edges of the cream belt on sand dome as well as the edges of the number plate below front light are red, too. What's the title of the video showing the P1?

I'm not sure if the blue used on the steam locos was the same as that on the diesels, but if it is, here's a mix that I used on some F-units that I painted for a friend.

9 parts Floquil 110050 Dark Blue

1 part Floquil 110010 Engine Black

The formula is from an article in Model Railroader on painting Wabash diesels in the blue/grey/aluminum scheme, sorry, but I can't recall which issue.

Jim,

another info: the stripe on that engine has been called "aluminium white". Don't know if anyone offers a paint called exactly that, but I think it couldn't be that hard to come very close by mixing some aluminium into white, perhaps about 1:5 or 1:4 - only guesses.

Wayne,

have many Thanks. Great info. I will look to some color photos of Wabash diesels, and if they are close to the P1 I will use your formula.

Thanks again
