MTH smoke unit

I have a 4-6-4 NYC dreyfuss hudson steam locomotive, 30-1113-1 with an intermittent smoke problem. Heating element works fine. The problem seems to be with the fan. Some times it works for a while then quits. I did resolder the plug and got it to work initialally.
Could it be the fan or perhaps a problem with a componet on the board on the smoke unit.

Hi nice to meet a new forum member. One big suggestion for you is to retype this question over on the Classic Toy trains or Model railroader forum. You will get  a ton more responses over at them. This is the Classic Trains forum and as such most model related questions tend to get ignored.
