I visited Chillicothe, IL several times in the 1960's and saw it usually combined during the fall through Spring and separate during the summer months. I emphasize usually as any day's traffic levels might dictate something different.

http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=super+chief+el+capitan+combined&sub=Search&ei=UTF-8&fr=fp-top Here is a list of sites giving various dates as to when the two trains were combined.Different scources vary by as long as from 1947 to 1957 as saying they were combined during the off seasons but ran under their own identities at peak traffic times.Maybe you can sift through this info and nail down the exact date the two trains were combined as one for good.Hope this helps.Don

Another Santa Fe El Capitan Question

Would the El Capitan from June 1969 have been combined with the Super Chief or did this combination happen later? I have seen a photo in a book from September of 1969 where they were combined.
