Hi Dave -

Photos of the South Chicago Branch stations show a combination of high (island-type) and low (in front of station house) platforms from 1896 or so.  By contrast, Randolph Street in this era was already all high-platform, with three island platforms serving the six-track terminal.  Hope that's of some assistance!

Anyone know when the Illinois Central installed high platforms on the Chicago suburban operation?   This was definitely before electrification.
