Water Treatment - Steam Era

I am very interested in learning about steam era water treatment by the railroads. I am especially interested in Northern Pacific and other railroads use of chemists to test and treat water during the 1930's and 1940's. Any suggestions about where I can learn about this topic? Any thoughts would be really appreciated.
