CNW Passenger Depot in Milwaukee, Wisconsin?
Posted by 1shado1 on Saturday, April 29, 2006 8:31 AM
Can anyone help me out with any info regarding the CNW Depot that was along the lakefront in Milwaukee? Any idea what year it was demolished?
Any idea EXACTLY where it was located, and what would be presently on the land it used to occupy? I had relatives that used to take a train from Ironwood, Michigan, to visit us in Milwaukee. I THINK we once went to that depot to pick them up, but I could be wrong. For some reason, all I remember was climbing a very long stairway (at least for a little kid), and am wondering if there were any long stairways (outdoors) with at least one landing, before continuing, at the depot. Thanks for any help.[:D]

I used this station in commuting between my office at Bolt Beranek and Newman in Cambridge, MA and a job site in De Peer, WI. I would fly from Logan Airport to Midway in Chicago, take a cab to the Roosevelt Ave "L" Station, get the f ront left seat opposite the engineer's cab on a North Shore Electroliner, go from the CNS&M station to the C&NW Lakefront station by cab or trolleybus, and then use the Penninsular 400 to De Peer. This train used long-distance gallery cars, designed to be converted to commuter caoches, but they did go into Amtrak service. A single-level diner was used, with false extra height and high roof to match the gallery cars. (I think a photo of this train may have appeared on the "favorite passenger train" thread on this forum.) If my memory serves, one enter from the street onto a west balcony of a high-roof concurse, and there were stairs and one or more elevators to the concourse floor level. The concourse floor extended out the east side of the station to be the northbound station platform. This is all from memory.

Dave,

Thanks for taking the time to relate the story of your travels involving the depot in question. I really appreciate it. : ) That trip sounds like a lot of effort was involved!
I wish I had your memories of the depot. But I can't be sure which staircase I'm vaguely remembering. Thanks for trying to jog my memory!
