Transformer wiring
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, April 26, 2006 8:47 PM
My father gave me his old Lionel train set that he received when he was a child. I'm at the point after 100's of hours of cleaning and soldering pieces back together to test the locomotive to see if she will run. I have no clue however on what wires go where. There are 4 dials for wires to be placed on the transformer. from left to right A_5 volts-B11 volts-C with 16 volts total on the bottome stating the total for all of them. Can anyone help with this, there are only to wire hookups for the track.
Thank's for all the help

Stef:
Is there a model number for the transformer? Usually 4 duguts (1033) or a couple of letters (RW, KW).
Is one of the terminals (the nuts for the wires) labelled U? In most cases, the U post goes to the outside rails and the A post to the center rail. You should have a little clip on piece for this connection, called a Lockon. (If you mix up the wiring and connect the U and A posts backwards it won't hurt anything at this stage.)
If you don't have a U post, I'm stumped.
(If you get really stuck, post this again in the Classic Toy Trains section of the Forums. That's where all the Lionel experts hand out.)

Follow the advice above and wire up for the lowest voltage. Try to run the train. If the train runs OK, leave well-enough alone. If it barely starts and just crawls along, go to the next voltage tap and continue until you consider performance satisfactory.

Thank you for all your help. I followed your advice and it worked perfectly. [:)] My dad's train is running like day one from the box, tons of smoke and the tender whistles are operating great. After 53yrs of not seeing daylight the train is like new. Thank's again for everyones input I greatly appreciate it.
