for steam that's long gone, CGW 2-10-4s are my favorite.

Historical-much harder question, but Great Northern's R-2 class 2-8-8-2s
are right up there and so are their M-2 class 2-6-8-0s.
The P-2 class is also a favorite-and two of them still exist-non operational,
2507 and 2523.

Too many to mention I'm afraid..... but if I have to choose, it will be Milwaukee Road's class A 4-4-2's and F-7 4-6-4's.

I still contend that the Southern 4501 is still the best, small and light enough to go anywhere, I hope she returns from retirement once again during my liftime.

Of those I've seen, N&W 2-6-6-4 1218,with Nickel Plate 2-8-4 765 a very close second. I wish i'd been able to see a Lehigh Valley Wyoming 4-8-4 or a Seneca 4-8-2 after they were modernized prior to WWII. But, as a sage once said "If I had seen them, i'd be an old geezer, now!" I also would have loved to have seen B&Ms R-1s, NYO&Ws Y-1s Rutland's L-1 4-8-2s, Central's Niagaras and.....The list will be too long If I keep this up!

Nickle Plate Berks were the finest, smoothest running, nicest looking locomotives, in my opinion.

I guess I'll go for one of the C&NW's streamlined 4-6-2's as used on the "MInnesota 400". However DMIR 2-8-8-4's are pretty neat too !!

PRR Q2

Nothing is more fairly distributed than common sense: no one thinks he needs more of it than he already has.

I'm right there with you Rick, Although my favorite currently running locomotive has to be Milwaukee Road 261.
Ain't it a shame the GN didn't set aside a R2 ,N3 AND a M2 for prosparity!

I was sitting in her cab this time last year in the back shops of the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum, Chattanooga, TN, and from the way they were talking, it will be quite a while before they take on the job of replacing those main bearings that kept going out on the old girl. She's pretty well buried back in the back shops too, but it was nice to see her again.

Union Pacific's heavy hualers all kick butt! However, the 4-8-8-4 Big Boy was the biggest and best of the lot.

This is actually an old topic. However, again, N&W J, New Haven I-5, SP Daylight, NYC Niagra, PRR E-6, DL&W and NKP Hudsons, then NYC J-3a, unstreamlined, then K-4, also unstreamlined, NKP-W&LE-C&O 2-8-4 (only minor differences), AT&SF and CB&Q and UP 4-8-4's, PRR D-16 (4-4-0), and then articulates starting with N&W A's then Y's, then the Yellowstones and similar 2-8-8-4's. Then the UP big jobs.

The H-8 Allegheny 2-6-6-6 of Chessie and Virginian, the Royal Hudson Class 4-6-4 of Canadian Pacific and the Class 59 4-8-2+2-8-4 of EAR. However I've enjoyed immensely my collection of wonderful DVD's showing me UP's Big Boys 4-8-8-4 and Challengers 4-6-6-4, SP's Cab Forwards 4-8-8-2, N&W's Y6bs 2-8-8-2, A's 2-6-6-2 and J's 4-8-4, not to forget European steam engines as the German 01 4-6-2, the British A4 4-6-2, holder of the world's steam record and the mightily impressive French A1 4-8-4. I remember as a child looking for hours and hours at an old railway book of my grandparents including my then favorite steam engine, the German record breaking streamlined Class 05 4-6-4.
