Columbus Georgia station

Hi there,
The other day I came across a picture of the station in Columbus, Georgia while searching for something else.
Can anybody give some information on the station? Books, articles, internet bases information? Anything is welcome.
Seemed like a good example for my modelrailroad, not too big, interesting stationbuilding.

Marc, it's been several years since I've seen the Columbus Ga. station. I believe, when built, it was a Central of Georgia station, and hosted quite a few local passenger trains. It also hosted GofG's Man o War, between Columbus and Atlanta. In 1960, Central of Georgia was taken over by the Southern Railway. The station continued to serve passengers until the inception of Amtrak. As far as I know, the station is utilized by Norfolk Southern operations, however, I don't know which specific one. The station is quite substantial, and is constructed of brick.

Hi Marc,

I happened to visit Columbus (GA) last year and got to view the station, externally. It looked in pretty good condition and was being used by the local chamber of commerce, in fact they now own the building.

I have some information on the building. To the left side of the front enterance was the baggage area, this has been redesigned to accomodate offices. The other side is essentially in original condition, including the central lobby. The Lobby measures 60 x 30 feet and has an Italian marble floor.

The original lobby marble drinking fountain has been restored as a decorative fountain with running water.

I grew up in Columbus and used to catch the Man O War out of there ( therefore my screen name). I have only one or two BW photos of the station form the 60's. I am glad that they saved it. There was a big round house there as well but when I got around to getting pictures of it it was no more. The passenger sheds are gone but other than that the outside of the building looks the same. In the mid 60's I did see a engine come in and right behind it was attached a minute man missle car, of course I had no camera that day. Good luck with your search. Phil
