rail map for GN
Posted by Anonymous on Friday, February 3, 2006 10:22 PM
in 1954, (Iwas 4) we left Seattle on a GN train (steam loco) and ended up in Glendive MT, where everyone got out and turned the train around by pushing on it! This 4-yr old thought he was pretty strong! LOL! The driver wheels were twice as big as me! Anyway, I remember the trip...mostly in the dome car for me, but I would like to find a map of that route if thats possible. I THINK we were on Great Northern, because if I remember right, "rockie" was on the engine cab.
thanks for any help

If you wound up in Glendive, chances are you were on the Northern Pacific Railway.
That road had facilities there. GN didn't run there. GN's route went across northern
Montana-through Libby, Whitefish, along the southern border of Glacier Park, then
over through Browning, Cut Bank, Shelby and on to Havre. Another clue is that you
mention that you were behind steam. GN ceased steam operations in the Seattle
area in 1953, while NP 's lasted till 1957. For a GN system map, try
www.gngoat.org or
http://www.greatnorthernempire.net/ These sites have lots on the GN.
I am less conversant on NP sites, perhaps someone else can help you.
