Updating my Lionel 249
Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, December 17, 2005 2:52 PM
I have an old Lionel set and the steam loco is a 2-4-2, #249. I was wondering if I could add a headlight to this unit and maybe a smoke unit. I’m not sure if it’s possible or not to do both or just one of them. Can anyone help me out with this?
Thanks

You'll probably get a more detailed answer in the Classic Toy Trains Forum but a general caution.

If what you are trying to do changes the locomotive from it's original form you could seriously impact any long term value in the event of selling it in the future.

If you bougt it to sell don't touch it. If not you can add anything you want. It wiill just take time and money and when you are done you will have something you will allways be proud of. (cnw4001) is correct in that the other forum would be more appropriate for more detailed answers. Good luck and enjoy!!!!!

Yes. You can use the liquid smoke kit used to replace the old smoke units in the post war smokers. It is available from most Lionel dealers. You can even put these units in cabooses to make them smoke.

This modification will ruin the collector value of your engine. Modifications usually reduce the value by 50%. Good luck...
