Railroad Timetables
Posted by locomatt63 on Wednesday, November 2, 2005 7:04 PM
Some years ago I had a friend who worked for the C&O railroad at the Plymouth MI yard as a trainmaster, he gave me a copies of the general operating rules, public timetable and an employee timetable for the Plymouth/Grand Rapids/Toledo/Saginaw Subdivions, alas being a young kid at the time, and moving several time they got misplaced. I would like to try and find the employee timetable for these divisions, if anyone has one, or knows where I can locate one it would be very much appreciated[V][V]

The best source I'm aware of for what you are looking for may be found in "The Official Guide of the Railways." Unfortunately, with the demise of the passenger train, these monthly editions have gone the way of the dinosauer.

If you've never heard of these guides, here's a thumb nail:

About 3 inches thick with pages as flimsy as tissue paper. Chock full of time tables for EVERY operating railroad in North America, Central and South America, Cuba and Puerto Rico. There's lots of other "good stuff" in those editions too - advertisements in particular.

Find one for yourself, and you've got a "treasure trove" of good info.

Do a web search on the title and you'll come up with all kinds of options - eBay being just one.

Hope this helps! [tup]

Try a used bookstore, especially one that also deals in ephemera. Tell the owner/manager what you are interested in. They might be able to dig something up for you.

Lots of train shows have dealers who sell old employee timetables. There's also a guy who advertises in Trains and MR.

Hope this helps.

I've purchased several employee time tables at train shows. They have info that does not appear in the Official Guides. Reprints of Official Guides occur now and then. Check out Cape Ann Trains Co capetrains.com (they advertise in TRAINS mag). They even have the 1922 and 1938 guides on CD. Their reprints are on better paper than what old copies of the original guides were printed on. My old ones, from railroad days, are getting brittle.

you might try to get on Carl Louck's mailing list. He deals in all sorts of RR paperwork. One month it will be employee TTs, the next month public TTs, then brochures and rule books, etc Some of the offerings go back to early 20th Cent.

Don't forget e-bay. I've bought quite a bit of time tables/rule books etc. Unlike model railroad stuff, a lot of memorabilia items actually are bargains, even with shipping

I have a "Grand Rapids, Saginaw, Detroit, Flint Terminal, Ludington Terminal Divs No. 2" C&O timetable dated 10/25/70 that's for sale. Go to http://www.forecyte.com/rlsteam2/rr_maps.htm where you can access my complete list. -- Richard Leonard (not a dealer, just have some extra stuff to get rid of).
