C&NW Passenger Train Fire 1951 or 1952
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, September 14, 2005 9:50 PM
When I was very young, my family was traveling between White Fish Bay, WI and Cedarburg, WI. The time of day was early evening, I would guess between 6 and 9 PM. We were traveling north on a road that paralled the tracks which were about 100 yards east. The train was in the CN&W streamlined colors of yellow with grn trim. The engine was an EMD E or F unit, either an A unit solo or an AA or AB. The consist was 5 to 8 cars long. As we overtook the train, we saw that the second to the last car was engulfed in flames for its rear 1/4, the flames shooting into the air about 25 feet. We past by and lost sight of the train because it was slowing down and/or we passed woods which obscured our view. This memory is as vivid today as the real experience was 55 years ago. Does anyone know the circumstances of the fire? What caused it, was the car destroyed, people hurt, etc. Thanks in advance.
