Great Northern Railway's 1955 Empire Builder.
Currently operating: SP&S 700 4-8-4 (a very overlooked locomotive)
CB&Q Pioneer Zephyr.
GN #27 and #28-combined Western Star-Fast Mail-a very interesting
model subject with a lot of variety.

The Crescent. Sheer beauty under steam... even if the locomotive paint scheme WAS stolen from the LNER. Absolute beauty under diesel... all "A" units, nary a "B" unit ever seen.

And it's still running!

Love modern EMD and GE power on the Union Pacific, as well as tried and true twenty cylender SD45s on the Montana Rail Link, push'n trains up Mulan Pass, and up thru Mullan Tunnel.
Did you know that in regular service, a locomotives air filter lasts about a year... But with all the trips thru the long Mullan Tunel the helpers must go thru 3 0r 4 times a day, air filters barely last a week! Now THATS railroading!!!!!!!!!!![font=Arial Black][/font=Ari

I'd have to say the former B&O's "Royal Blue" between Washington and New York (Jersey City). Lunch in the dining car was always a special treat as a boy.

Well, having ridden on it most recently, the honor goes to Conway Scenic's Notch Train, from North Conway up (and I do mean up) into Crawford Notch is the best. As for "working" or real trains, TH&B/CP/PC (Amtrak) 385-386/later 182-183 were railfan delights since a fan could go up front and watch right next to the engineer at work. They weren't good for conversation, as they were busy, but it was as close to a cab ride as I'll ever get, unless I really get lucky. The late David P. Morgan had an affinity for RDCs that I didn't appreciate until I rode on the "To Hamilton & Back." I MISS that train. On it's last trip VIA assigned the very first RDC, 6210 ( ex Budd 2935) to the train, which was full for the last run to Toronto. Recommended reading:" In the Shadow of Giants "(either edition) By Norman S. Helm, a look at a fine big/little railway.

GN-Rick; You're sure right about SP&S 700 being overlooked. I've been to the Brooklyn Roundhouse a few times between '90 and this last June. Fantastic machine. It always disappoints me how few people outside the railroad community even know it exists.
To answer the question though; My favorite train would be an SP Daylight pulled by a Lima-built GS locomotive.

My favourite train is the Orient Express around 1912, ultimately before World War 1. Pulled by one of the famous Austrian 2-6-4 express locomotives and consisting only of six axeled wooden luxury cars, made of finest teak and mahagoni. This was almost a royal train

1. The Johanna Ore turn with 5 RS3s roaring with all they've got to get the train up the grade.
2. Any 1960's Reading coal drag with it's mix of 55ton, 70 ton, and 100 ton hoppers of many different designs and sizes.
3. NE87/NE84 under D&H in the early Conrail era. That hotshot had rights over everything but passengers.

I can't recall where I said this before, but as for my favorite freight, NYC's ML12 wins even over LV's NE-1,but that was purely based upon the motive power. ML-12 was an experience for train and car buffs alike in the days before that sadly necessary plague-the enclosed tri-/bi level auto rack. The power was anything NYC had in North Detroit that evening and could be fleets of EMD F7s, GP7s,GP9s,GP20s,GP30s,GP35s and GP40s. Alcos were mostly FA/B1s,FA/B2s RS3s, RS11s, RS32s, and C430s. GE U25Bs,U28Bs (both P&LEs and NYCs pair) U30Bs, and U33Bs. The best experience was to see this train with FA/FB/FB/FB/FA cabs, which I saw as a kid. I was torn between the new cars on the racks and the FAs. The best showplace was at a crossing east of Batavia NY off NY 33, just after crossing over the NYS Thruway. IF you can time it right it is still one heck of a place for a picture of a CSX or Amtrak run going over I-90. Just remember, however, that standing on a bridge in New York is against the "law", in the pea brains (IF ANY ) of the local GeCensored [censored]!

Currently, my favourite train is EuroCity No 6, a classic European fast train connecting Chur in the Swiss alps(capital of Graubünden and headquarters of famous Rhätische Bahn/metre gauge)via Zürich, Basel, Mannheim, Köln and Bremen with Hamburg in northern Germany, a distance of an estimated 1000 km. The train consists of 13 - 14 cars, among them a first class vista dome car which offers beautiful sight all around, 2-3 first class, 8-9 second class cars and a diner, of course, all owned by SBB, Swiss Federal Railways. Between Chur and Zürich, as well as Zürich to Basel the train is pulled by a class 460 SBB engine, and from Basel all the way to Hamburg a DB class 101 has it in tow.
Beautiful scenery, beautiful train, fast travelling(Max speed 125 mph).

Tom

Back about 1966 I was traveling from Lousiville Kentucky to Oakland California with a show horse stable in a private horse car (SP). At Chicago the CB&Q put us on the fast postal express train. That train loaded at the rail post office which had to be the biggest operation I had ever seen. We were told to be certain that everything was battened down as the train would be traveling in excess of 80 MPH. They even took our crew on a tour of the five unit locomotive power used before coupling up. So it was us, twelve horses and ponies, and about what appeared to be a mile of mail sorting cars. That had to be my favorite train, it was the scarriest darn ride I ever had. That train left the yard limit and you could actually feel it accelerate, it pushed you backwards! Commuter stations went by so fast they just made a poof sound! Our car was 75 feet long, but switch points rattled by in less than a second. One good thing - we made Omaha in record time. How those mail sorters managed to work while that train ran at speed is a miracle in itself. It's all gone now no doubt, but oh what a ride.
