Dose anyone know why the DD40X has an air gap in the middle????

I have often wondered why the DD40X has an air gap in the middle of the long hood dose anyone know the real reason for this>>>glennbob

The opening allows someone to get from one side of the locomotive to the other without having to walk clear to the end. It might take a lot of walking otherwise if you had to service or restart one on the engines on the road and didn't have that portal.
