What condition is the 4-8-4 GS-6, 4460 in? Could it reasonably be restored to operational condition?

I've seen photos of it and it could use some repair. To me it looks like it's being ignored there. I bet the museum wouldn't even bother restoring a locomotive like that. Also it would cost around the same price as when the 4449 was restored.

Well, other people have mentioned that it doesn't look like the museum is giving much attention to 4460. It just sits there more or less ignored. I'd sure like to see it come back to Oregon to join 4449. Last weekend the 4449 steamed down to Sherwood for the auto show. I was there in time to see it pull into town. VERY impressive.

I just saw an advertisement for a 2007 California State Railroad Museum calendar which stated in part "This Southern Pacific calendar contains images of steam and diesel. July features our newly acquired GS-6 No. 4460 at the California State Railroad Museum."

Is that true? Has 4460 been moved to Sacramento? The CSRM web site doesn't make any mention of it, that I could find.

Interesting...Addition to the callender or the museum? If the latter, it was better off in St. Louis, look at the current condition of the Santa Fe collection as an example, they were donated virtually intact, now after years of exposure and vandalism they look ready for the scrap heap..Better yet donate 4460 to the City Of Portland, maybe Doyle can come to the rescue....

If at or intented for delivery to Sacramento, how does one move a dead 4-8-4 with friction bearings across half the country without anyone in the railfan community noticing? Sounds like a Air Force area 51 project to me...

Cooslimited, Dave, I saw the ad mentioned above also, a few weeks ago. I called the CSRM for clarification. It was their mistake, and they have since changed their site accordingly. The locomotive they meant to advertise was the SP P-8 class 4-6-2 #2472.

I belive Portland, OR can restore one more steam locomotive.

Although they are still restoring that Pacific....

Didn't I read somewhere or other (some time ago) of smoebody in the Portland area planning restoration on a GN P-2 Mountain?   Is that geriatric memory acting up?  If not, did anything ever come of it?

I thought 4460 wasn't at the museum, but it IS, but reminising, yes, in fact, I have seen it , AND 1522.

Wasn't the 4460 the one with SKF rollerbearings? Or was it the 4459?

If you check with earlier postings, it's friction, so it's 4459.

Only the 4458 and 4459 had roller bearings.One had Timkins,the other SKF.

The Pacific in question would be OR&N 197. It sat in the Brooklyn Roundhouse for several years with very little real progress being made, largely due to the fact that there just weren't enough volunteers available to help with the restoration of the 197, plus maintain the other two (SP4449 & SP&S700) that live there, not to mention all the other rolling stock the Portland crew maintains and operates at the Brooklyn Roundhouse. Then in 2008 Holte Manufacturing fabricated and donated a new cab for the 197. That, along with other recent work on the tender and boiler has made a big difference. The goal has always been to restore the 197 to running condition. What's needed most is volunteers. Contact the Friends of 4449 at www.4449.com if you would like to help or make donations. Some of the 4449 guys also work on the 197. Bob Slover is one that comes to mind.

Getting back to the SP4460, I don't remember where I heard this, but the story is that the main rods were cut with a torch in 1958 to facilitate the move to St. Louis. Anyone know if that's true?
