The Norfolk and Western's J and the Pennsylvania's T1, especially the early production examples (6110-1). They both seem like an excellent fusion of speed and aesthetics.

The N&W's A and Y6b are of course immediate runners-up and far better choices for freight service. Throw the N&W M in there for fun.

Hard to beat the GN Mountains for rugged handsome passenger power. And the SP Sacramento built Mountains were also excellent performers.

N&W's Class A is a horse of a loco. It will pull all 8 sets of my N&W coal cars (48) along with 20 more freight cars and a caboose on my club's layout which has a 1.3% grade leading to a 1.8% grade. I never have to supply more than 35% of available power. She is my pride and joy.

I voted for the GS4.The SP Daylight is my favorite by far.
[;)]I am assuming by GS4, you meant the SP steamer.On the PRR, a GS4 was a GE 44 Ton diesel switcher. G=GE,S=switcher,4=400HP[}:)].

I voted for the Berkshire...(love the super-power concept) but my ULTIMATE favorite was not on the list......the Pennsy 4-4-4-4 T-1 class. Looks, Power, Class!

Us Brits had a couple of gooduns as well-Gresley`s A3 pacifics ( Flying Scotsman et al) and A4`s(Mallard etc) from the L.N.E.R,Stanier`s"Duchess`s on the L.M.S,Bulleid`s light pacifics for the Southern,The G.W.R Kings & Castles...............how long have we got ?

Have to agree with j1love as to the Pennsy's T1. From what I read sometime back it seems they made some innovative designs that took steam locomotive power to it's ultimate. But by then the diesels were taking over. (Sigh)

For the ones you listed - my favorite would be the garrett. Otherwise I prefer the smaller steam engines 4-4-0, 2-8-0, and 4-6-0.

For me theres always been a tie between the Great Northern Class M2 2-6-8-0 and the Class N3 2-8-8-0s.

I'm inclined to vote for the Garratt as well. That so many railraods the world over used them in one wheel arrangement or another says something regarding their utility.

There you go a vote for Americas FIRST V Twin! Love Heisler's. Never used to like geared steam but after running a 1912 Heisler for 3 years now I am hooked. For mainline speed and power give me a NKP Berk! Drag service a N&W Y6. Fast Pass or freight over mountains? N&W class A! The Mercedes of steam herself.

My personal favorite steamers were Santa Fe's 2900 class 4-8-4 Northerns.

I was forced to vote for the Challenger, as UP's 3985 is one of only 2 steam locos I've ever seen in operation.

My favorite is Reading Comany's 2-10-2s. The largest in the world. They were rebuilt using the boilers from 2-8-8-2s.

Where are the Moguls, Consolidations and Americans? I guess its all about power and the later years...not that that is a bad thing. Most of the railroads in my area used smaller power...2-6-0 Moguls, 4-6-0 Ten-Wheelers and the like until they dieselized or went out of business!

I grew up with a 15" guage 4-4-0 just about a mile from my home. It was a little tourist railroad called The Hoot Toot & Whistle which used to be on US 20 East of Elgin, IL.

The Locomotive was a product of the Sandley Light Railway Company of Dells, WI, and it survives to this day on the Riverside And Great Northern Railway in the Dells on the grounds of the long defunct Sandley company. If you have the book "Little Railways Of The World" This locomotive #98 is shown in the plates in various stages of completion.

4-8-4, then 4-6-2. My real favorite is the 0-6-0. I think life was more interesting and involved in one of those cabs.

I saw Garratts working at 15,000 feet in the Andes many years ago. They were ugly, but commanded respect, especially when you dared to stand track-side when one thundered past cracked wide.
