Sorry! I forgot to suggest the Monticello Railway Museum in Monticello, Illinois. They operate a Wabash F-7A, several freight cars, and a few cabooses (cabeese? [:D] ). They also have the Wabash Depot from Monticello, IL. It was built in 1899, moved 3 times to its current location (Monticello), and is somewhat unusual in having two separate waiting rooms--one for the ladies and children, and one for the gentlemen. Most of the men smoked in those days, and the "delicate" ladies and children weren't expected to put up with the smoke. (Oh, how we've changed since those days! Or were they just ahead of the times?) The ticket office is in the center of the Depot, between the waiting rooms. The web address is:

The Wabash Railroad Historical Society has a new web site:

http://home.comcast.net/~wabashrr/wrhs.html

Get ready to hear the instrumental version of "The Wabash Cannonball" when you go there. A Google search for "Wabash Railroad" turned up a bunch of sites, including some picture sites. There is also a link on the home page of the Historical Society for Wabash pictures.

This link might help you remember the Chicago south side junctions & trains.
You are probably referring to the Chicago & Western Indiana, their line went to Dearborn Station on State st.
Wabash shared the station with GTW, ATSF, & others.

What gauge do you model in?.I don't have a layout yet but I have been buying O scale cars. I have about 40 0/0-27 cars and 2 engines but I like the look of 2 -rail better so that's what I hope to go with, so I'll keep the 3 rail for around the tree and one day build a 2 -rail point to point in the basement. Current roster is weaver (30), mth (3) and atlas (1) 2-rail but 0 engines. I would like to purchase atlas because of the tmcc feature that way I can run 2 and 3 rail. I just came back from Cabela's in Wheeling WV and followed route 70. The n&w( p&wv ) crosses the Monongehela river at Belle Vernon but 0 traffic today

The info about the Wabash in Pittsburgh is incorrect, this would have been the Wabash and Pittsburg( Pittsburgh and West Virginia). Does the kcs still run to Ft.Polk? we loaded out to go to Ft Irwin in the summer of 83, I hope north fort is modernized, when I was there it consisted of ww2 era barracks and had very few perminant party . Stay safe

Are you on North Fort or South. I was stationed their from 81-83 b 3/10 inf (2nd Brigade 5th mech).we were across from the field house and a blue steel minimall type building. I just want to say Thanks for your service.I don't know about the Wabash but there was a bridge and still is a tunnel in Pittsburgh. The station and freight house were removed I believe in the 50's (after a fire). I would contact the historical society as already suggested. As we used to say in 3/10 "double quick bulldogs"

The Internet has really been helping me lately. http://terraserver-usa.com/ has digital aerial photos and topo maps you can print off. The aerial photo for Gibson City is from 1998, and the topo map is from 1984. A bit after Wabash, but they still may be useful.

Also check out websites for local libraries, and university libraries. For instance, Virginia Tech has the archives for the old Norfolk and Western, and a ton of online digital pictures covering almost the entire system. This includes lots of aerial photos of yards and facilities. I am sure Illinois has a State Historical Society. Maybe they have online resources.

There is also a Wabash RR Historical Society. You might try them.

I bet you are like me, a long way from the line you want to research. My line of interest is in Northwest Indiana and Southern Michigan. I live in Kansas. I have made two trips along the line and discovered lots of structures I did not know existed. My next trip will be to check out info at the small local libraries and museums.

Hope this helps.
