The late, lamented Putnam Division.  And weren't those 4-4-0's elegant?

Photos sent me by Nathan Gerstein.  1.  at the 155th Street and 8th Avenue Ninth Avenue Elevated Statiion.   2. just north of the Sedgewick Avenue (The Bronx)  Engine Facility.

At a guess, this picture was taken near the north end of the station in late afternoon, looking eastward from the Manhattan el tracks to the NYC platform.   I looked up this engine in the Edson & May book on NYC engines.  Number 1130, class C-7 – noted on Page 54.  Interesting is that this engine is noted as being retired in 1909.  Since there seems to be third rail on the Manhattan  track, the date of the picture is probably bracketed between 1902 and 1909.  At that time, the 155 St station  had two island platforms.  The NYC used the east platform
And the Manhattan used the west platform.  All this changed around 1916, when the NYC was cut back to a new terminal station  at Sedgewick Ave, the Putnam Bridge was leased to the Manhattan, and the el was extended over the bridge and through a tunnel to a junction with the Jerome Ave IRT line.

 

My comment:  Note that the Jerome Avene elevated strcture was first sed only by the elevated trains, since the connection to the Lexington Avenue Subway, including the East Side Harlem River Tunnels, were not ready for operation in 1916.
