In the steam era, especially troop trains, How do trains on the Western Railway of Alabama interchange with the Central of Georgia trains going to, say, Columbus, GA.

There are interchange tracks north and east of the diamond in Opelika.  There are a couple of tracks on the east leg making up a small interchange yard.  The WRofA (CSX) runs northeast-southwest and the CofG (NS) runs northwest-souteast through Opelika.  Union Station is in the east quadrant of the diamond.  Photos displayed at various downtown businesses show that things there haven't changed all that much since the steam era.
