When those men pledged "Their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor" they weren't fooling.

Richard Stockton's one of the most tragic.  The article states he signed a document recanting his support of independence, but in the last 20 years or so there's been some doubts about that by some historians.  If a member of the Continental Congress recanted his role in the same you might have expected the British to have made a big deal about it and broadcast it widely, considering Stockton was what we'd call now a "high profile" prisoner. but they didn't.  In fact, there's nothing in the British or Loyalist press of the time concerning it at all.  That's not saying it didn't happen, but now there are serious doubts.

At any rate, the harsh conditions of his imprisonment eventually killed him, so he deserves to be remembered as a patriot.
