Good to hear from you again Father!  And I wouldn't call you biased, as a matter of fact I'd call you perceptive.  Those N&W "Mastodons" were unique locomotives in their own right.  Very few American railroads picked up on the 4-8-0 wheel arrangement and those that did didn't keep them anywhere near as long as the N&W did.  475 and her siblings lasted darn near to the end of steam on the N&W.

 

One was in use in Bristol as a switch engine at the passenger station in the fifties, working Pullmans and headend cars on 41, 42, 45, and 46. 41 and 46 at times were in the station at the same time.

My grandson and I were there that weekend, rode behind 475, just watched 611.

It was a great day. I live just 50 minutes from Strasburg, and have been there likely close to 100 times in the last 50 plus years. Two or three trips a year is not uncommon for us. 

It never gets old.

I understand perfectly.  We're heading up to Collegeville PA for Thanksgiving tomorrow, as we've done on-and-off for thirty years, and I always try to squeeze in a visit to Valley Forge, it's only six miles from my sister-in-laws home.  I've been there a good 20 times, and as you put it so well. it never gets old.

Call me biased, but I'd prefer to see the "Mastodon". I think it was in the shop when I visited in July, 2017.

Well, there's been plenty of time for the videographers to get to work, and I found a good one of Lady Firestorm's "Art Deco Delight", N&W 611's visit to the Strasburg Railroad.

PLUS an appearance by the Strasburg's N&W "Mastodon," 4-8-0 475.  You'll love the sound of that old N&W "hooter" whistle!  Old-timers here in Virginia say there was something mystical, magical, and otherworldly about the sound of a "hooter" whistle echoing though the snow-covered hills and valleys, especially late at night. 

Not the first time Virginia's invaded Pennsylvania of course, but this time it was a lot more fun for all concerned!  Wink
