Well sure, Mike's a Long Island guy!
I tell you what, I hope I age as well as DiMaggio did! What a distinguished looking man!
My God. Look at those kids dressed up like Marines...
I suppose Bill Gallo was "The Old Man" at 20!
Kurt Vonnegut called World War Two "The Children's Crusade," the Allied side of it anyway. How right he was.
Well Mike sure does!
Anyone besides me remember the Bill Gallo sports cartoons in the New York Daily News portraying Steinbrenner as "Steingrabber." and wearing a Prussian spike helmet?
Overmod BaltACD Don't know how Joe or Mickey would have responded to today's game. Even more interesting to think how they'd have responded to Stoneburner (as my father, who disliked his approach to team management, called him) during the great throw-money-at-it years.

Well Mickey and Billy Martin were teammates for several years and Steinbrenner only hired and fired Billy five times as Manager of the Yankees.
Never too old to have a happy childhood!
Steinbrenner! Oh brother, the Clipper and the Mick would have gotten out of there as fast as they could.
Babe Ruth would have beat him up between bites of a hot dog! Lou Gehrig? Probably not, the "Iron Horse" was too nice a guy.

wjstixAs I recall Costas (who was born in 1952, the year after DiMaggio retired) was talking specifically about Mickey Mantle, his boyhood hero in the 1950's - 60's, and how the old-timers said Mick was great but Dimaggio was better. FWIW Mantle struck out a lot, Joe D hardly ever, and Joe was a phenomenal fielder...but I'd still take Mantle's .421 career On-Base-Percentage.
Not to down play either Joe or Mickey and their abilities - today's game had changed radiclly. In 'their day' very few pitchers were throwing in the 90's Bob Feller comes to mind - today teams won't even sign a kid as a pitcher unless they are throwing in the 90's.
Unfortunately today's game has devolved into dinger or dust. It is either out of the park or a strike out - the rate of both are rising. Hitters have become so predictable a 'dead pull' hitters that the defenses are almost universally using 'the shift' with 3 infielders and two outfielders on the side of the field the hitter will 'pull' to. Don't know how Joe or Mickey would have responded to today's game.

Ah, the era of Joe DiMaggio ending and the era of Mickey Mantle about to begin.
Just like years earlier, when the DiMaggio era began when the Lou Gehrig era ended.
Interesting, the recording of the conversation between Joe and Mickey, the seasoned, polished performer and the new rookie.
The Google books attachment was interesting as well.
I'm reminded of something sportcaster Bob Costas once said. He'd be talking to his elders about current baseball (Late 60's, early 70's) and the talented new players.
"Oh these kids are good all right," they'd say, "But you never saw DiMaggio, kid. You never saw The Real Thing!"
Joe and Mickey
Oh boy. oh boy!
Thanks Mike! Thanks Vince for passing it along!
The Lionel show with Joe DiMaggio wasn't too successful, I think it barely lasted a season. That experience soured Joshua L. Cowan, the owner of Lionel, on TV advertising, so the Lionel Company stayed with print media as long as Cowan was running the company.
Oh, see that 736 Berkshire in the lower left corner of the ad, between the GG1 and the F3? I've got one! 65 years old and still runs!
