Federal, AB is the first town west of Coronation, once home to a CP branchline terminal and yard.  Many other towns in the area have Imperialistic names, like Alliance, Fleet, Veteran, Consort, Monitor, Fusilier and Major.  In later years the line became part of Central Western and saw Alberta Prairie's excursion trains headed by their 2-8-0 #41 and CN 6060.  All abandoned now.

FYI.

 

In the photo the Psgr. Torpedo Geep @ Revelstoke is moving a Gang Water Car converted from a steam locomotive Tender for refilling at the Roundhouse or Shop Track.

 

Most Terminals had a S/G Unit on the Yard to Protect the Passenger Trains in the event a S/G locomotive failed.

 

Gangs in Outfits received their water for cooking and washing by Rail on the Wayfreights, a weekly chore.

 

One of my jobs at a Remote point was refilling same w a Garden Hose. Took all weekend!!

 

Other Water Cars were old tank cars converted years before with dome removed and a platform built Specifically to be coupled behind the tender on a steam locomotive on water-poor Subdivisions.

 

 

Water Car from Tank Car. These High Running Board cars were scary when walking the train, in Motion. Hand brake wheel Horizontal, on some. Car to right is a Reefer for Ice for Gang Cook Car, the latter often a converted 12-wheel Coach or Sleeper.

When built the CPR Geeps had their Bell behind Pilot right front corner. In that location it would pack in with snow and be almost inaudible or not ring at all so the bells were later located up high to keep them clear and able to be heard.

 

More of a safety risk for maintenance.

 

CNR had the same problem with the bells on their A Units and later put them on the roof.

Almost the last CNR Freight C Line to run. Had Front MU ADDED, one of three to get it.

Many CNR Freight C Lines had great paint, as they spent much of their careers in storage.

As the Dynamic Brake unit was removable and interchangeable, this CLC B Unit had a bell on it's roof. The D/B had come from another A Unit. Note the Louvres do not match.

FWIW.

 

For YEARS CN Electrics had their bells on the Roof. Then near the end the bells were located under the frames at ground level re ease of maintenance and away from Pantographs.

 

There is an above view of a CPR RS10 with it's bell on it's roof.

 

FWIW.

 

With the Geeps with the large headlight.  If the Reflector Glass was ' Yellow ' as were steam, this was a softer light reflecting back in snow and fog conditions.

 

On Roadswitchers with bell under frame. In Run 8 the Bell was not always audible on the other side or when backing with several locomotives in the Consist.

Did CP pipe the water from the tender like NP did with their water-baggage cars?

This is really interesting. When I still have a decent HO scale layout I always mix and match different steam engines with different tenders, but I never tired connect a water tender after the diesel! By the way, that headlight and the bell were some pieces of equipment removed from the steam engine, wasn't it? :- )
