I think the main reason the 3rd and Townsend station was closed was that it had a number of structural issues and would have been prohibitively expensive to update to earthquake-resistant standards.  Not much of an outcry when it closed in 1975 or 1976.  Not much loss in track length, either, in the cutback, though gallery "commute" cars made that less of a problem.

Prior to 1971, Coast route trains (Daylight, Lark, Del Monte) all operated out of Third and Townsend.  Valley route, Cascade route, Overland route and connectors to the Coast route (at San Jose) operated out of Oakland Mole until 1957, then 16th Street (Coast route connectors used Jack London Square station on First St.).  16th St. was used until the Loma Prieta earthquake damaged it beyond repair in 1988.  It still stands near I-880, but with no tracks.  WP had its own station at 3rd and Washington, but its trains also used the Oakland Pier until it closed. WP's station still stands, and looks pretty good.  Santa Fe had a station at 40th and San Pablo in Oakland, used Oakland pier on and off until the 1930s, later moved to Richmond, where trains had been serviced anyway.

It Might be in Brisbane. If it is in SF, it is at the extreme border.

I was in The Painters Union in SF. The shop i worked for was on Bryant Street for a long time......money, restrictions...they moved to an Industrial Park in Brisbane that was Right Next To That SP Yard. If you walked across the street, you stared right at it.

Not sure why it was never developed. As far as i know, it STILL looks like that today.......

BTW......i could NEVER get Spell Check to work on this forum. It is not even an option Confused

I have been Reading/Looking At a few books lately.

FWIW they are -

1. Great American Train Stations

2. The Late Great Pennsylvania Station

3. Train Stations Then And Now

.......and it struck me that San Francisco never put much effort into saving the old depot. I cannot say with certainty. I would have only been 14-15 years old at the time, and not really into Trains.....but it seems like it was torn down without much fanfare.?

Kind of a shame...though God knows we lost A LOT of beautiful depots without much comcern.

Was S.F. much of a "Train Town".?  They were a dead-end peninsula Peninsula, which made it a bit weird for trains, Oakland was much better located...but still.

Any of you guys know much about San Francisco and its lost depot.?

Regards passenger trains and the Third and Townsend Staion.....did the S.P. Daylight terminate there.?

I suppose The California Zephyr only went to Oakland/Alameda.?

Thank You
