Three Cylinders, Part Deux
Posted by CNJ Camelback on Thursday, September 6, 2018 8:24 PM

I am quite amazed at all the responses on initial posting for this subject on Sept. 4, 2018.  I certainly now have a clear picture on how locomotives with 3 or more cylinders were put together.  I particularly appreciate the several drawings and even a video to help to make things even clearer.  Since Sept 4 this year I happened to recall an experience I had with three cylinders.  About 15 years ago I took a ride on the Durango and Silverton Narrow Guage Railroad.  We were on a gentle up-slope towards Silverton, when the train seemed to jerk a little and then came to stop.  To make a long story short, one of the master driving rods had to be removed from the engine.  The expert and safety conscious crew determined that the train could continue the trip with a helper engine.  After a while the helper arrived and we continued on to Silverton on "three cylinders."  It was a great experience, a nice train ride with beautiful scenary, and good photos to take.
