Chicago,North Shore, & Milwaukee RR..
Posted by 3rd rail on Sunday, August 5, 2018 8:59 AM

I am looking for some good books/DVD,s, etc. covering the North Shore.  There were several good books published in the 1970's, but those were all B&W books. I'd  like to hear about some good recent color ones.. Probably not the "Morning Sun"books.  Too expensive....  Thanks.....

Todd, for starters try this...

On the menu bar top of the website select "Photos and Videos,"  then select "Videos" on the next screen, when the next screen comes up look for the bar labeled "Keywords."  Type in North Shore and hit "search."

I just tried it and found an eight minute excerpt from the Sunday River DVD about the North Shore in the Classic Trains collection.  You should Google "Sunday River Productions" for price and availability.

I believe there's a North Shore fan site, try Googling that too.  Fan sites are pretty good for finding historys of their related 'roads.

The two CERA Bulletins Interurban to Milwaukee and Route of the Electroliners together give a very comprehensive history,Including wonderfully detailed maps and excellent B&W photos.  The Magazine of the enthusiasts organization is called First and Finest.

CERA more recently published a history of the North Shore's development before the Insull era. B-141 "Before the North Shore Line" is still listed on CERA's website.

I just found an interesting website about the North Shore...

https://www.northshoreline.com

Check it out, I did, it's fun!

Also, the Summer 2013 issue of "Classic Trains"  had a very interesting article about the North Shore, it was available as a back-issue but may be sold-out by now.  Click on "Shop" on the top bar of the website and follow the prompts from there to find out.

First and Fastest is the magazine published quarterly by the Shore Line Interurban Historical Society ( www.shore-line.org ).  Full of stuff about current and past Chicago area railroads.  Back issues are available, along with "Dispatch" issues which focus on a particular railroad or service.  Dispatches 2, 4 and 7 all concern the CNS&M.

At the time of the shut down there was a several page article mostly black and white pictures in Trains magazine. The Illinois Railroad Museum has one or more cars and the Fox River trolley museum has at least one car from the North Shore.
