Coming back into Windsor from Detroit using the tunnel it is super easy to make a wrong turn, thinking you are correct in doing so, and missing Customs ... whoo boy, sirens and chase cars galore. Wonder if they ever fixed that?

...happened to me once but I stopped almost immediately when I saw the custom checkpoints in the rear view... one guy chased me down and said "that way, now!" Got away with the mistake, think it happens a lot. Then I saw the same sequence on the 'Border Security' show.

Blurted out.. " hey that happened to me".

Well, at least the SEALs turned him into a piece of Swiss cheese.  People should stop acting like he's hiding in the bushes down the block.

Just ridiculous.  What do you do if you're driving down the street, realize you're going the wrong way, and make a U-turn?  Do sirens go off and SWAT teams descend on you?

Here's CanUSA Street in Derby Line, Vermont - Stansted, Quebec. Looks like a nice residential street doesn't it but the houses on the left are in Quebec and those on the right in Vermont.....and you can no longer just walk across the street to visit your neighbor. You must have a passport and go through border controls at the end of the street.

There are numerous islands along the border shared by both countries and when in the Thousnd Islands it gets real nutty. Your boat and dock can be in the USA, but the cabin in Canada. The cabin on your left is US, the cabin on your right is Canada, your backyard is US, your front yard is Canada. Heck of a thing.

Anyone here ever been to any of the US enclaves?.. that is territory that is completely within Canada and one must travel thru Canada to get to US land. There are about ten of them along the border. The most famous are Hyden, Alaska, Point Roberts, Washington and the Northwest Angle of Minnesota, all recently featured on the Smithsonian Channel show/series 'Canada Over the Edge'. Fascinating. The Northwest Angle in Minnesota is the northernmost part of the lower 48. Generally there is little to no border crossing formal security or screening and at the Northwest Angle you stop and pick up a phone and 'report' to someone hundreds of miles away.

There is another in Estcourt Station Maine.

The International Peace Garden in Boissevain Manitoba/Rolette County North Dakota on Turtle Mountain Park is totally incredible, I have been there. Canadians can only enter/exit by road from one side and the Americans from another on the other side but nothing is needed to intermingle and enjoy the park. Truly an 'open border' that I can support. It is beautiful beyond words and a very magic place.
