Great posting Dave...I remember it well. How time flies, I still consider them new! Now they are talking preservation. Good grief.
Testing was done on the Chemin de fer Orbe-Chavornay because it was the only DC (750V) standard gauge line in Switzerland with normal overhead (the Uetliberg line of the Sihltahl-Zuerich-Uetliberg has offset 1200VDC catenary due to sharing of Bhf Selnau with the 15KV AC Sihltal line). At the time the OC had a mix of steel and wooden passenger equipment.
There are a good number of meter-gauge 750V DC lines with normal overhead.
