Miningman is correct. Canadian National retains the rights to predesessor companies that make up the railroad today just as BNSF, CP, UP, NS, and other carriers do as well.
I had no problem when CN operations in America operated under the GT, GTW, CV, or DW&P banners but CN's "invasion" in the US Lower 48, to me at least, is the GRAND FUNK indeed!
Ditto with Canadian Pacific. It operated subsidiaries Soo Line (which included the original Wisconsin Central), DSS&A, and the International of Maine Division in the US. The SOO LINE name should be restored to operate all CP track in America. Period!

Nope!...Grand Trunk the Railroad had it long before that...the Grand Trunk Station, a beach store in Port Dover, had to get special permission and sign legal stuff in order to continue to use the name. The band had special permission and did something similiar except they were Grand Funk Railroad...close enough to raise the eyebrows of the lawyers.
But then that rock band would sue them for trademark infringement.
Trinity-- I second that! Great idea. Makes perfectly good sense. Time to get rid of the lingering association with a government corporation and back to what it was originally...The Grand Trunk. Period.
I'm sorry to hear about the passing of your friend and GTW fan. I look forward to meeting Robert when I join the railroaders, railfans, and modelers, in the roundhouse in the sky that's just beyond the Big Rock Candy Mountains!
On a personal note, I feel that CN would fit much better in a globalized NAFTA society if it would adopt Grand Trunk Rail, dropping CN from the masthead altogether and using a modernized green and yellow version of the original color scheme as was seen on the entire CN system which included GTW GT CV and DW&P.
I hope it will happen sooner than a longshot. We'll see.
Trinity-Very good of you to remember your friend Robert. That kind of homage is important. Had a dear friend who was Grand Trunk Western fan going back in the steam days/early Diesel. I do miss him and it all.
He was a modeller extraordinaire, could never do those custom paint jobs of his.
Now CN is fine and all, but losing the Grand Trunk Western identity itself is rather annoying to me. Everyone knew it was under the CNR umbrella big time but it made a certain separation clear. Maybe with the renegotiation of NAFTA it will be necessary to bring it back! Longshot but who knows.
Two photos that would warm the heart of my all time best friend who I sadly lost in 2006. He loved anything that was Mr. D's Machine but above all he loved Alco and MLW the most!
