Santa Fe and Western Pacific stopped using steam locomotives for freight service in 1953, while the Union Pacific followed in 1960, Southern Pacific, which Union Pacific took over in 1996,stopped using steam locomotives in 1957. Hope this helps

Don't forget Colorado & Southern used steam in the Rocky Mountain West north of Denver in the late 50s during the sugar beet harvest.  What about the shortlines use of steam in the West during this period?
