It's been a while, but I think they were the three millimeter size. Put a metric ruler across the gap of the missing class lights and you'll be there.
I've also used larger size Swarovski crystals in red for "tail lights" on passenger cars.
I should add the green Swarovski's aren't as dark as the original Lionel crystals BUT they reflect light much better than the originals.

I don't know about Question One, but Question Two's easy. Use plain o' liquid super glue, works for me. As a matter of fact, I used Swarovski green crystals from Michael's craft store and they look great.

Don't be embarassed, you're not the first one to confuse the two 'sites and I'm sure you won't be the last.

PS: I've got a Lionel 736 myself and love the thing, all it's cracked up to be!
Hello this is my first post.
I am restoring my grandfather's Lionel 736 variation A steam locomotive.
I have cleaned and lubed the engine and it works and looks great, however I have two tasks to complete my project.
The steam chest was damaged badly and I was able to find a NOS steam chest (holes but no flag holders) and 2 NOS hexagonal nickel flag holders.
1) Does anyone have any tips in pressing these flag holders into the holes on the steam chest properly.
2) I found 2 replacement green jewels, the jewels/rhinestones on the sides are missing. What would be the best way to glue(type?) or attach the new ones onto the boiler front?
