You are looking at a rather poor snap shot of three pieces of history.  My 80 year old brother took this snapshot with his phone camera in his garage.

My dad was a vice president with Marshall Field's in Chicago.  Before he took over the Fieldcrest and Karastan divisions, he ran the "Special Projects" department of Marshall Field.  One of their huge projects was to design and outfit train Pullman cars (furniture, decor, accent pieces, and so on).  There apparently was a serious competition between train lines to see how elegantly things could be cecorated in some of their signature cars.  Sometime when we have dinner I can regale with some stories on the subject that you will find interesting.

One of the articles in the Pullman designs that was something my dad had created was the (at the time famous) Pullman ash tray.  These unbelievably heavy objects (of which you see three in the picture) were in every Pullman lounge, smoking car, and restaurant car.  I'll wager there aren't too many left beyond these three, in good condition.

We used them in our home when I was growing up.  The tray around the outside was meant to put glasses with drinks down.  There is a name plate on the bottom of each which, fittingly, says, "Pullman".

If Dave Klepper still lived in the U.S. I would suspect he would want one.  There might even be collectable value, who knows?  I Googled it and found a pic of one that was not in very good shape.

Anyway, do you know any train buffs who would want such a monstrosity?  The difficult part would be shipping it (they are in Lake Havasu City, AZ), but one or all are free . . . .

Like David, I no longer live in the States.  Besides, I never started to smoke.  Ditto with my wife, son and daughter, so I'll pass on a Pullman ash tray.  I still have a brand spanking new metal Conger hand lanturn stamped AT&SF (yes, with the "&") that was issued to me just before I made the move from Dallas to Ansbach, Germany in late 1976.  Matter of fact, I still have three others albeit sans railroad markings.

I made the tragic mistake of selling my switch key collection to a good friend in Texas when I made the move across the big pond.  I could kick my caboose all the way to Kansas....I mean Texas....

Having traveled aboard the Canadian from Toronto to Vancouver for many years, I recall many quiet afternoons semi dozing in one of the chairs in the Park car lounge at the tail end when, at certain speeds, the very similar ashtrays/drink stands would commence a certain annoying rattle which always eluded my efforts to stop. A small irritant to an otherwise always wondrous trip.
