MTH PROTO 2 DIESEL ENGINE
Posted by jlettie on Friday, July 8, 2016 5:43 PM

Hi

My name is Joe. I have an older MTH Proto 2 diesel Engine. I installed a new fully charged 9 Volt battery. When I placed the engine on thre track no sounds. The engine moved forward neutral and reverse. The lights worked, but no proto 2 sound. I opened the engine to check for any loose wires or anything that was disonnected. Everything seemed ok. There was no smell of anything burnt. I tried the factory reset 1 whistle and 5 bells. nothing. I called MTH they were no help. If I need a new proto 2 board, I'll discard the engine rather than pay MTH $350 for the board and $100 installation. Ant help would be appreciated. My E-mail jlettie@verizon.net. THANKS

If you posted your question on the Classic Toy Trains forum or a Model Trains forum you may reach someone who can answer your question.

I haven't seen a posting from Joe on the "Classic Toy Trains" Forum, but just in case you look in here again Joe I have a suggestion.

If you've got movement on the engine but no sound, and you want sound but don't want to pay MTH $350 for the board I've got a suggestion.

Do you have a car of any type with power pickup trucks on it, say a baggage or passenger car, or something similar?  You can easily install a Williams diesel sound unit in it.  The units cost $109.95 each and they have three types that mimic the sound of a GP30, an RS-3, and a SD70.  Any train shop can order it for you.  Couple the sound equipped car behind the engine and you'll never know the difference.  Not the best solution but certainly a cheaper one.
